The GPS for Your Nose
I often explain Navigation Sinus Surgery to my patients at Dr. Rao’s ENT by using the analogy of a GPS in a car. When you drive in a new city, the GPS tells you exactly where you are in relation to your destination, preventing you from taking a wrong turn. The sinuses are located in a very “expensive neighborhood” of the human body, situated directly beneath the brain and right next to the eyes.
During surgery, the navigation system uses infrared sensors to track my surgical instruments in real-time. This is mapped onto a 3D model of the patient’s own anatomy on a monitor in the operating room. This allows for sub-millimeter precision.
